About Gwen Mathewson
Gwen Mathewson is a solo collaborative attorney and mediator who practices in King and Jefferson counties.
Gwen supports clients in moving wisely and with confidence through their family transitions -- whether forming a partnership, getting married, separating, or divorcing. Her primary goal is to facilitate cooperative, creative and cost-effective planning and problem solving that enables clients to step into the future with optimism.
To that end, she uses only the non-adversarial processes of Collaborative Law and mediation. Gwen is motivated largely by two concerns: the difficulty for clients of navigating through the complex emotions of family change, and the high costs of conventional family law practice. She believes that a portfolio of out-of-court services empowers clients to make their own best choices for themselves and their children.
Gwen is past-president of King County Collaborative Law (KCCL) and is a member of Collaborative Professionals of Washington (CPW) and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP). With KCCL, she guided the development of an Access to Collaborative program to enable more people to find affordable services. Gwen recently completed the year-long IACP Leadership Academy, and she regularly participates in trainings, conferences, and discussion groups to refine her skills and gain new perspectives.
Gwen did her formal education at Yale University (B.A.), the University of Chicago (J.D.), and the University of Washington (M.A. and doctoral candidacy). Her three-decade career included a stint in academia for study, teaching, and writing before she settled into her current family law practice.
